Getting the toxins out of your home is the biggest first step towards living a healthy lifestyle. And yes, sometimes that includes getting rid of toxic thoughts and emotions as well, but that’s for another blog.
Getting the toxins out of your home is my passion! You see, chemicals are actually very useful. That's why they have crept into products we use every day. However, some chemicals are toxic to your system and there are toxin-free ways of achieving the same ... or even better ... results with something completely natural.
When it's time to clean, it may seem easiest to grab whatever products are available at your local store. However, those products may not be the safest. Sadly many of them - even the “green” ones - contain ingredients you DO NOT want in your house or anywhere near your family. But what ARE those ingredients and why don’t we want to use them? Let’s take a look!
How many toxic Chemicals does the average American use on a daily basis?
If you are a woman, you likely use over 300 chemicals every single day, and if you are a man you likely use over 200!!! From personal care products like gel, hair spray and moisturizer, to laundry detergent, soap and cleaning products, the list goes on and on.
So what toxic chemicals should you avoid, and why?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES- What does this do? These are the bubbles you see in things like shampoo, toothpaste and dish soap. It helps break up dirt so it can easily be washed away. The problem with SLS and SLES is that it's known to stay within the human body for 5 days and is a main endocrine disruptor which is a leading cause of male and female infertility (CLICK HERE to study more) Extensive exposure to SLS has also been linked to eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea and severe skin irritation. There is no reason you should have to expose yourself to this chemical because Thieves Dish Washer Soap, Thieves Dish Soap and Thieves Laundry Detergent are the best cleaners I've ever use, AND they are SLS free. Triclosan - When you think of Triclosan, think of hand sanitizer, antibacterial hand soaps, deodorants and antiperspirants. It is also added to many consumer products including: first aid products, cosmetics, clothing, kitchenware, and toys. It is the anti-germ agent. Triclosan builds up in the body and has been found in breast milk, urine samples and blood samples. It has been studied to alter gut microbiota and contributed to colon inflammation. Exposure also increased the number and size of tumors in mice with colon cancer. Triclosan has been associated with cancer development and decreased cardiovascular function. Some studies in humans also suggest that triclosan exposure might have negative effects on fertility, fetal development, and rates of asthma. Bacteria that are exposed to triclosan can also become resistant to it, which has raised concerns about triclosan’s role in antibiotic resistance. (VISIT HERE to learn more) ... With the way the world is right now, hand sanitizers and soaps have taken center stage in daily hygiene. The wonderful news is you can have the same germ killing ability that Triclosan has but in a completely harmless product. Parabens - Let's talk toothpaste. Your toothpaste likely contains the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and the Triclosan mentioned above. Add to that Parabens. Parabens are a preservative that allow products to survive for months, even years, in our bathroom cabinet. Well that's awesome, right?! The problem is, when you use these products they can also enter your body through your skin. In 2004, a British study found traces of five parabens in the breast tissue of 19 out of 20 women studied. Parabens are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking estrogen. Too much estrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumours, which is why paraben use has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. Parabens aren't just bad for humans, they impact the environment too. 'A scientific study reported that parabens have been found for the first time in the bodies of marine mammals. Researchers believe that it is likely these parabens come from products we use that are washed into the sewage system and released into the environment. YIKES!!! When it comes to studying the labels, the names to look out for are butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben, aka the most commonly found parabens. (CLICK HERE to learn more) ... Thieves Household Cleaner
#2 QUESTION: What is the best product from YL to clean an entire home?
#2 ANSWER: Thieves Household Cleaner is a plant-based, ultra-concentrated cleaner that can be used on virtually every surface of your home… bathrooms, kitchens, cabinets, counters, floors, furniture, toys, carpets, mirrors, glass, wood, walls, and more! If you’re a little unsure about using it on something, go ahead and test it in an inconspicuous area. I have personally never had an issue using it on ANYTHING. It’s the only cleaner I use!
AND it’s safe to use around your pets and kids, too! It’s created with naturally occurring surfactants derived from coconut and sugars, so you get a powerful clean without harmful, abrasive chemicals. It’s even septic safe!

#3 QUESTION: Why do I need to worry about the soap I use to wash my dishes?
#3 ANSWER: Well, you aren't eating the plate for lunch. However, you do put food ON your plate. The food picks up the detergent residue from the plate and then you ingest the food. That means that you ARE ingesting the soap or detergent. You also inhale the chemicals as the dishwasher releases them during washing. Ahhh!!! But don’t worry… I have some solutions!
Thieves Automatic Dishwasher Powder
Thieves Dish Soap
Thieves Automatic Dishwasher Powder combines the power of natural enzymes, essential oils, citric acid, and saponins derived from soapberries for a superior cleaning system without the use of harsh chemicals. It’s also infused with essential oils for extra effectiveness and a great, fresh scent. Depending on the type of water you have, you may have to play around with this one. You may notice that this soap isn’t quite as sudsy as traditional dish soaps. That’s because they don’t add the harmful chemical that creates the bubbles. So… I have an easy hack for you that not only creates more bubbles, but will also TRIPLE your bottle of soap! #WinWin
First, remove 2/3 of the soap from the bottle and store for later. Add 1 tsp baking soda to the remaining soap. Fill with distilled or filtered water and shake until all mixed together. Use as directed on the bottle. So easy!

#5 ANSWER: Remember that harsh chemical I mentioned in the beginning - Triclosan? It is a banned ingredient for antiseptic washes but it can still be found in other products like toothpaste! Why is it not safe to apply to your skin but it’s perfectly ok to put in your mouth? That doesn’t make any sense!
Toss that questionable toothpaste and go for one with all-natural ingredients and essential oils - like the Thieves AromaBright or Thieves Whitening toothpastes!
